Landmarks Preservation Commission To Consider Proposed Addition In the Heart of the Meatpacking District This Tuesday



On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission will consider a proposal to add a large addition to 9-19 Ninth Avenue (Little West 12th Street) in the heart of the Meatpacking District. Fortunately, the site is also in the heart of the Gansevoort Market Historic District GVSHP proposed and successfully fought for in 2003, and thus any changes to buildings are subject to public hearings and the review of the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission.

This two-story structure, facing 'Gansevoort Plaza' (the cobblestoned, wide-open intersection of Ninth Avenue and Greenwich, Little West 12th, and Gansevoort Streets), is a visual lynchpin in this historic neighborhood. The proposed addition would roughly double the height of the building, and would be visible for more than a half dozen blocks down Greenwich Street (click here for more on the application and here and here for images of the proposal). We feel the proposed addition would too visually intrusive, and overwhelms the existing building, which for many years housed the restaurant Pastis.
It's important that the Landmarks Preservation Commission hear from the public about this proposal before they make any decisions.

Proposed St. Luke's Tower Back at LPC

The proposal by St. Luke's Church to build a 15-story tower on the southwest corner of their block at 100 Barrow Street (at Greenwich Street) will come back before the Landmarks Preservation Commission for a public meeting on this Tuesday, May 6, at approximately 10 am (see LPC schedule).

GVSHP has raised serious concerns about this proposal, which was heard by the Commission earlier this year. The Commission asked for some changes to the design at their last meeting on the application, and presumably the applicant will present changes in response to the Commissioner’s comments. The public will not be allowed to speak at this public meeting, but will be allowed to listen, see the applicant's presentation, and hear the Commissioner’s comments. The Commissioners may vote on the application, or urge further revisions.

Latest Landmark Applications Available

GVSHP provides an ongoing record of all applications for changes to landmarked properties in our neighborhoods (Greenwich Village, NoHo, Gansevoort Market, the South Village, and the East Village) that require a public hearing before they can be approved. These proposals range from minor alterations to large additions, demolition, and new construction on landmarked sites.
