During AIDS Awareness Month, hear about the history of the AIDS epidemic in the Village through first-hand accounts. This panel will explore the social, statistical, and health histories of the disease, much of which is often overlooked.
New York City was one of the first places in the nation to report a case of HIV/AIDS and, as the disease spread, many of the cases were centered in Greenwich Village. Remember the neighbors that we have lost by learning about their battles, triumphs, and about those who helped them in their struggle.
Panelists include: Jonathan Engel, Associate Dean and professor at Baruch College, School of Public Affairs and author of The Epidemic: A History of AIDS; Fred Valentine, co-director of NYU's Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and early New York City AIDS epidemic pioneer; and Matthew Baney, who was a director of Saint Vincent’s HIV/AIDS clinic during the initial outbreak and for many years to follow. The discussion will be moderated by Hal Moskowitz, AIDS activist and GMHC Board alumnus. These panelists will combine personal stories with historic information to create an evening of learning and remembrance.
