Continuing Education

This fall, expand your knowledge about Jane Jacobs, urban renewal, immigration’s influence on the architecture of the South Village and more. GVSHP is now accepting reservations by the general public for its one-day courses for real estate professionals. Mornings begin with lectures by experts in the field. The day concludes with afternoon walking tours and visits to private spaces not usually open to the general public.

Focused on the rowhouse, tenement and industrial loft architecture of the South Village, you will explore the changing population of the neighborhood and its impact on architectural styles and buildings types.

Course topics include:

  • Historic preservation and the importance of the New York City Landmarks Law for both brokers and buyers

  • The influence of Italian immigration on the development of tenement architecture and industrial loft buildings south of Washington Square Park.

  • The role of artists and real estate developers in creating new housing forms from the once-stately rowhouses of the Village, transforming the deteriorating streets and social character into the bohemian neighborhood still evident today.

  • South Village architectural walking tour and private visit and case study of MacDougal-Sullivan Gardens, a landmarked development.

Discover how the rise of urban renewal led to the writings and advocacy of Jane Jacobs, the people’s rejection of many long-standing planning principles, and the creation of environmental and land-use review laws.

Course topics include:

  • The role of notable historic figures in the preservation movement in the 20th century, including Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses.

  • The practice of eminent domain and its ultimate rejection by the people of New York City.

  • The rise of the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) and its impact on real estate today.

  • A West Village walking tour and case study of West Village Houses, a middle class community built through the Mitchell-Lama housing subsidy.

Administrative Policies — Please Read

Registration Cancellation/Refund Policies:  Cancellations must be received in writing at GVSHP a minimum of three business days prior to the start of the course to receive a refund. A $25 service fee will be assessed on any refunded monies. NO REFUNDS or CREDIT will be given for NO-SHOWS.
Course Cancellation Policy:  GVSHP reserves the right to cancel the course if a minimum enrollment of 15 is not met.
