Re: 43 MacDougal Street, Manhattan, Block 520, Lot 83
Dear Mayor DeBlasio,
I write to you with urgency concerning the rapidly deteriorating condition of 43 MacDougal Street, a rowhouse located within the Charlton-King-Vandam Historic District. The building has long been vacant and is plagued with severe problems of vermin, water damage, and deteriorating materials, which have led to health and safety concerns and have contributed to the building’s structural instability. The owners remain unresponsive to the nearly $120,000 worth of accrued violations.
It’s been several years since the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and neighbors began asking the City to take action to reverse this escalating problem. I was encouraged to hear, over two years ago, that the Landmarks Preservation Commission had begun to initiate a Demolition by Neglect lawsuit against the owner. However, since that time little has been done to repair the building aside from temporary measures to slow the deterioration, such as constructing a sidewalk shed, sealing the roof and boarding the windows. As a result, the situation continues to worsen. Graffiti mars the façade, and the reported presence of squatters in the building and on the sidewalk shed at various times over the last few years is a great safety concern to neighbors.
So far, action by the City has been extremely slow. I urge the City to explore alternate means to fix this dire situation before a valuable historic resource deteriorates beyond repair.
