Provide Input on the Stonewall National Monument

The National Park Service is drafting its “significance statement” for the Stonewall National Monument. GVSHP was part of a broad coalition of groups which lobbied to get the Stonewall designated a national monument in 2017, after we led the charge to have the Stonewall Inn landmarked in 2015,and were co-applicant for its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Significance statements express why a park's resources and values are important enough to merit designation as a unit of the national park system. These statements are linked to the purpose of the park, and describe the distinctive nature of the park and why an area is important within a global, national, and regional context.

Stonewall Inn

On June 23, 2015, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to approve landmark designation of the Stonewall Inn at 51-53 Christopher Street, the first such site the Commission has landmarked based solely upon LGBT history.
