Calling For Appropriate Public Review of Bike Share Stations

GVSHP is very supportive of efforts to encourage non-polluting forms of travel and dedicate more public space to pedestrians and bicyclists, and believes that a bike share program can and should be a great asset to our neighborhoods.  But we are deeply concerned that the dozens of bike share stations that have recently been sited throughout our neighborhoods were not required to go through the same public review and approval process for changes in historic districts that a small property or business owner would have to go through for a much less substantial change.

We believe stations can and should be located in our neighborhoods.  But we also believe that fairness, as well as proper oversight, require the same analysis and the same opportunity for public comment for bike share station siting that is required for other changes in historic districts.  Read our recent letter to Landmarks Preservation Commission Chair Tierney HERE, and our prior letter to Mayor Bloomberg HERE.
