Important Bike Share Station Meeting Tomorrow Night, May 2nd

Community Board #2 will hold a forum tomorrow night, Thursday, May 2nd starting at 6:30 pm at P.S. 41, 116 West 11th Street  (6th/7th Avenues) regarding the new New York City Bike Share program and the siting of bike share stations in Greenwich Village, NoHo, SoHo, Hudson Square, and Little Italy (read CB 2’s resolution on the bike share program HERE).

The City has recently begun installing these bike share stations at various locations throughout our neighborhoods (see map HERE, deatils HERE).  GVSHP is supportive of efforts to make our city and our neighborhoods safer and more accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists, and we believe that the Village is an appropriate neighborhood for a bike share program.  However, we want to ensure that the size, design, and siting of stations is consistent with the historic character of our neighborhoods.

Towards that end, GVSHP has written to Mayor Bloomberg urging that the placement of bike share stations, like other changes in historic districts, should be subject to full public hearing, review, and approval at the Landmarks Preservation Commission, allowing the public an opportunity to comment upon the design, size, and location of these stations (read our letter HERE).

All who are interested in this program and providing feedback about it are strongly encouraged to attend tomorrow night’s hearing.
