Strong Support for GVSHP's University Place/Broadway Rezoning Plan

We are pleased to share with you a very strong letter of support for GVSHP’s University Place/Broadway Corridor Rezoning plan from Congressmember Carolyn Maloney, Borough President Gale Brewer, City Councilmember Rosie Mendez, State Senator Brad Hoylman, and Assemblymember Deborah Glick – read it here.  All these elected officials have joined GVSHP in calling upon the City to move ahead with a rezoning proposal we formulated which enjoys broad support from the community.  Our plan would replace current zoning which allows 300+ foot tall towers (such as the 308 ft. tall tower planned for the Bowlmor site at University Place and 12th Street) with reasonable height limits for new development.  It would also eliminate incentives for dormitory and other university development, favoring instead residential development, with incentives for including affordable units in new developments.

Thus far the City has refused to move ahead with this plan, in spite of broad support.  This has been particularly frustrating given the City’s advancing its own controversial “Zoning for Quality and Affordability” rezoning plan, which would lift height limits for new development while arguably doing nothing to increase the quality or affordability of new development, while our rezoning plan clearly would.  We are hopeful that this strong statement of support will help convince the City to move ahead swiftly with this plan.
