This Tuesday the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) reviewed the plans by the MTA to construct an emergency fan plant on a parking lot they own at Mulry Square, Greenwich Avenue and 7th Avenue South. GVSHP was there to oppose the design, which we strongly feel is inappropriate for this prominent location within the Greenwich Village Historic District.
On the positive side, the LPC largely agreed with our criticisms, and unanimously issued a negative report, declaring that the design was not appropriate for the site. On the negative side, because the MTA is a City/State agency, the LPC’s decision is only advisory, not binding as it would be for private owners. What the MTA will do remains to be seen.
