Plaque Unveiled at Former Home and Studio of Chaim Gross

Yesterday GVSHP unveiled our ninth historic plaque installed in conjunction with co-sponsor Two Boots. Our latest marks the former home and studio of renowned 20th-century sculptor and artist  Chaim Gross at 526 LaGuardia Place (at Bleecker Street), now the home of the Renee and Chaim Gross Foundation.

Gross was an immigrant from the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe whose joyous and surprising works now grace public spaces and museums throughout New York and the world
. He lived and worked in the 1870 townhouse/loft at 526 LaGuardia Place from 1962 until his death in 1991. The space is now filled with more than 10,000 objects of art, both by Gross and from his collection of modern, African, Oceanic, Pre-Columbian, American, and European art. Since 1994, the space has been home of the foundation named for him and his wife, which retains and preserves the space and the art, and makes it available to the public – learn more here.

We were joined by scores of neighbors and art lovers for the unveiling ceremony yesterday, and were honored to have Chaim’s daughter Mimi, as well as Dr. Susan Fisher, the Director and Chief Curator of the Renee and Chaim Gross Foundation, speak at the event. The unveiling was followed by an open house at the foundation and delicious pizza supplied by Two Boots.
