Celebrate LGBT Pride Month
with GVSHP
There are many ways you can mark Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month with GVSHP, given our neighborhoods’ rich history as a haven for LGBT people and leading the way on civil rights and social justice movements.
First, check out our Civil Rights and Social Justice Map, with nearly forty sites connected to significant moments in LGBT history and figures – view it here.
Looking for more? View our Guide to Greenwich Village and East Village LGBT History here. Check out our Oral Histories with Archivist and Historian for the NYC LGBT Center Rich Wandel here, activist David Rothenberg here, preservationist and Julius’ Bar historian Tom Bernadin here, and dance pioneer Merce Cunningham here. Explore our historic plaques marking the homes of figures such as Lorraine Hansberry, James Baldwin, and Frank O’Hara, as well as the site of the founding of the organization P-FLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).
GVSHP is also partnering with Rattlestick Theater to present Saint Vincent's Project: Novenas for a Lost Hospital. This memorial is intended both to honor and acknowledge the past and – as the AIDS crisis is far from over – energize and inspire current and future generations of activists, caregivers and people living with HIV.The show runs from June 12 - 15 and 17, at Rattlestick Playwright's Theater, 224 Waverly Place.
