Dear Chair Tierney:

I write to strongly urge the Commission to move ahead with designation of 67 Greenwich Street, the fifth of thirteen federal rowhouses proposed for designation by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and the New York Landmarks Conservancy that the Commission has heard. 

This wonderful house, built in 1811, stands as a remarkable survivor and captures a wonderful piece of New York City’s history.  I know that the owner is opposed to designation and has been trying to claim that the building is either too structurally unsound or economically unfeasible to preserve.  But expert testimony has refuted that, and experience has shown that houses like this can find wonderful new life with a little care and work.  It would be a shame to let this opportunity to ensure the continued survival of this terrific piece of our City’s history disappear.

I also strongly urge the Commission to move ahead with reviewing and protecting the remaining eight houses from GVSHP and NYLC’s list of thirteen.  Along with 67 Greenwich and the four houses the Commission has already designated, they make up a fantastic cross-section of our City’s federal-era architectural heritage, and deserve to be preserved.

I applaud you for your work thus far on the federal houses, and strongly urge you to keep moving ahead.
