Dear Chairs Derr, Reck, and Rinalo:

I write to express my strong support for the proposal by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and a coalition of community organizations to ask the City to help New York University establish a secondary campus or campuses outside of our neighborhoods, so that the Village does not have to absorb all of NYU’s future growth.  I STRONGLY URGE THE COMMUNITY BOARD TO SUPPORT THIS PROPOSAL.

With NYU’s continuing growth, more and more of Greenwich Village, Noho, and the East Village will eventually be taken over and built up by NYU.  While our educational institutions may be a vital ingredient of our neighborhoods, I fear that in the coming years they will simply become the dominant and overriding presence, changing the dynamic and diverse character of our neighborhood forever and perpetually adding new out-of-scale and out-of-character developments.  The only way to prevent this is to provide NYU with an outlet to grow OUTSIDE of our neighborhood.  I believe that such a plan is not only in the best interests of our neighborhood, but of NYU as well.

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS EFFORT BY APPROVING A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF GVSHP’s PLAN ASKING THE CITY HELP NYU LOCATE A NEW CAMPUS OR CAMPUSES OUTSIDE OF THE VILLAGE.
