Celebrating the Designation of the South Village Historic District Phase I

On June 24, 2010, residents and supporters of the South Village came together at St. Anthony of Padua Church to celebrate the recent designation of 1/3 of the district by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) and to make plans for further action. The LPC voted unanimously to landmark this first phase, adding 235 buildings on 11 blocks to the existing Greenwich Village Historic District — the largest expansion of landmark protections in Greenwich Village since 1969!

While the recent vote was a cause for celebration, the lack of landmark protections for the remaining two-thirds of our proposed South Village Historic District and the lack of a commitment by the city to move ahead expeditiously with the remaining section is a cause for serious concern.

Below is a slideshow showing the status of the buildings within the proposed district, many of which remain unprotected. GVSHP is committed to pushing for landmark designation of the entire remaining area of the South Village as soon as possible, and will continue to closely monitor the area for any emerging threats or danger.
