A Decade of Accomplishment —
Keep Village Preservation Going in 2020

It has been an incredible decade at Village Preservation, and we couldn't have done it without you.

More than 75% of our support comes from members and individuals like you.

With that support, here’s what we’ve done over this decade:

Some of the over 1,000 buildings for which we’ve helped secure landmark designation over the past decade (l. to r.,top to bottom):  Westbeth (2011); 827-831 Broadway (threatened with demolition, saved by landmarking, 2017); 128 East 13th Street (threatened with demolition, landmarked 2012); St. Anthony of Padua Church and Sullivan Street (2016); Minetta Lane (2013); Congregation Mezritch Synagogue (threatened with demolition, landmarked 2012).

  • Began our “Business of the Month” program, celebrating and promoting more than sixty local small businesses

  • Started our blog “Off the Grid,” which now has over 2,290 posts about our neighborhoods’ history that have been viewed over 1.5 million times

Village Preservation oral history subjects

  • Made almost sixty oral histories with preservation pioneers like Jane Jacobs, artists like Jonas Mekas and Marlis Mober, architects like Jim Polshek and Richard Meier, activists like Chino Garcia, and owners of businesses like Veselka, B & H Dairy, Porto Rico Coffee, Kenny’s Castaways, and Umanov Guitars digitally available on our website, which have now been accessed over 15,000 times

  • Inaugurated our YouTube page which now has over 215 videos about our neighborhoods, viewed over 72,000 times

  • Introduced our Civil Rights and Social Justice Map with over 200 sites of historic significance in our neighborhood, which has been viewed by over 100,000 people

  • Created our Greenwich Village Historic District Map with then-and-now images of over 2,200 buildings, and information on nearly 1,000 sites of historic or architectural interest

  • Launched our Building Blocks website with the history and images of all 3,000 buildings in the East Village, which has been viewed by over 167,000 people

  • Established our online Historic Image Archive, which now has over 2,200 images in nearly 40 collections from the late 18th through the early 21st century, viewed by over 175,000 people

Our Annual Village Awards

  • Celebrated over 70 neighborhood  businesses, cultural and educational institutions, community leaders, and artists with our annual Village Awards, which has been attended by over 3,000 people

  • Researched the history of over 3,500 buildings in our neighborhoods to help educate the public about their value and advocate for their preservation

  • Mentored more than 50 interns, teaching the next generation how to document, celebrate, and preserve our history

Imagine what we can do in the 2020s with your strong support.  Give today, and make sure that the future of our neighborhoods honors, celebrates, and preserves its past.
