367 ft. tall Tower by Robert A.M. Stern Contemplated for 14 Fifth Avenue
It was reported today that Madison Realty Capital is contemplating a scheme for a 367 ft. tall tower designed by Robert A.M. Stern for 14 Fifth Avenue (8th/9th Streets) in the Greenwich Village Historic District – read coverage here, here, and here. Such a building would be the tallest in Greenwich Village, and tower over its neighbors, some of which are no more than four or five stories.
While this plan has been reported in the press, no permits or applications have yet been filed. Because the site is located within the Greenwich Village Historic District, any such changes must go through a very long public review and approval process, which would include public hearings at both the Community Board and the Landmarks Preservation Commission. It remains to be seen if this particular scheme is serious and will ever be pursued by the developer. If it is, however, GVSHP, the public, and our elected representatives would have ample opportunity to fight the plan and demand its rejection by the LPC.
