Re: 186 Spring Street

Dear Chair Tierney:

The Landmarks Preservation Commission MUST save 186 Spring Street.  I am deeply disturbed to learn that the LPC is applying different standards to this site, of enormous consequence to the history of the gay rights movement nationally, than it has to other sites throughout New York City.

In spite of New York’s primary role in the national and international gay rights movement, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission has never landmarked a single site in New York City based upon lesbian and gay history.  This is unfathomable.

The State of New York has just found the house qualifies for the State and National Registers of Historic Places based upon the “extraordinary significance” of its gay history.  The LPC should at the very least hold a hearing and give this house and its incredible history its due.

Follow the lead of the NY State Historic Preservation Office, and move ahead to honor and preserve 186 Spring Street now!

Re: 186 Spring Street

Dear Speaker Quinn:

Thank you for your support for preserving 186 Spring Street.  It is deeply disappointing that the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has not heeded the call to honor and protect this singular landmark of gay and lesbian history, nor has it ever designated any site in New York City based upon LGBT history.

The LPC’s refusal to consider this site and the inconsistent standards they are applying in this case are an insult to LGBT New Yorkers and all fair-minded individuals.  Your support for designation is very much appreciated; but as the Speaker of the NYC Council, I urge you to use the power of your office to shine a light upon the Commission’s double-standards and intransigence, and to call for immediate action to protect this site.

Thank you.
