Update on 35 Cooper Square
 GVSHP has been working with the Historic Districts Council, the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors, City Councilmember Rosie Mendez, and a coalition of community groups and elected officials to try to save 35 Cooper Square, a ca. 1825 federal-era house which is the oldest surviving structure on Cooper Square and one of the oldest on the Bowery. Recently purchased for development, the City has refused to landmark the structure, in spite of its age and connection to both the Stuyvesant family which ruled New Amsterdam and key figures of the Beat poetry movement.
Earlier this week, this coalition met with the new owner of 35 Cooper Square to urge him to consider integrating preservation of the historic structure into his development plans for this and the two neighboring empty lots to the north.
