Hearing for Meatpacking office tower this Tuesday, April 28th
The request by developers of 437 West 13th Street (at Washington Street) for permission to build a glass-walled office tower 55% larger than the zoning allows, with a retail space three times as large as zoning allows, will be heard by the NYC Board of Standards and Appeals this Tuesday, April 28th starting at approximately 2:30 pm or later.
The developers of the proposed 215 ft. tall tower are making the novel claim that having the High Line — which is being transformed into a public park and world-famous tourist attraction — come through their property creates an economic “hardship” for them which necessitates their being granted these special exemptions from zoning restrictions. The plan involves demolition of a historic Art Deco meat market building which is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places, and which the owner lobbied to have excluded from the Gansevoort Market Historic District, which would have prevented demolition.
