43 MacDougal St. Finally Scheduled for Public Hearing

After many years of working with neighbors to push the Landmarks Preservation Commission to take action on this neglected building (learn more here), we have some important news about 43 MacDougal Street, the 1846 Greek Revival rowhouse that has been deteriorating for decades. A new owner has begun restorative work on the building, including stabilizing the brick walls, which was approved at LPC staff level. However, the new owner has also filed an application to raise the building height and/or construct a rooftop addition, which will require a public hearing at the community board and the LPC to determine its visibility and appropriateness.

Based on the agenda released by the LPC, this application will be presented at the LPC on Tuesday, June 3rd (time TBD), which means it will be presented to the community board’s Landmarks Committee on Tuesday, May 27th at 6:30 P.M.

If you cannot attend this hearing, GVSHP takes photos of each application and will share them on our Landmarks Applications Webpage. This page also provides information on how you can weigh in at both the community board and the LPC. If you cannot attend either hearing, information on where to send your written comments in advance is also available.

At this time, GVSHP has not seen the plans for this application so we cannot offer our opinion yet, though we have heard the proposed addition may be as little as two feet high. We are encouraged by the news that the new owner is finally taking action in restoring this important building, and we will testify at the LPC if we feel the rooftop addition is not appropriate.
