Dear Chair Tierney:
I write to strongly urge the Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate 101 Avenue A a New York City landmark.
Few buildings anywhere could be said to so vividly embody the history of New York City as a mecca for both immigrants and artists. 101 Avenue A’s history from the late 19th century right up through the 20th century shows how New York was on the cutting edge of immigrant life, labor history, and cultural and political innovation and expression.
101 Avenue A is at once an utterly typical East Village building and at the same time an extraordinary example of everything exceptional about this neighborhood. The vivid brick polychromy and florid iron detailing of this tenement stands out in a neighborhood of noteworthy tenements. The importance of the ground floor gathering hall to the German immigrants of the neighborhood, marking everything from the General Slocum disaster to organizational triumphs in the labor movement, cannot be underestimated. Over the years, the building housed everyone from the long-standing “Mayor of Avenue A” to Warhol Superstar Nico. And in its later years, the Pyramid Club, located in its ground floor, became famous throughout the world as a launching pad for musicians, performance artists, and a new wave of politically-conscious drag.
The proposal to landmark this building has strong support from local elected officials and community groups. I think it would do the Landmarks Preservation Commission, the East Village, and the cause of preservation proud to landmark this singularly important building.
