Taking on Equinox Greenwich Avenue Billboards

Shortly after Christmas, giant, multi-story billboards were erected covering the Greenwich Avenue and West 12th Street facades of the Equinox Building in the Greenwich Village Historic District. According to online city records no required permits for the signs were issued by the Landmarks Preservation Commission or the Buildings Department, and it is unlikely that such permits could be granted in light of the zoning restrictions and landmark protections for the site.

GVSHP regularly reports illegal billboards to city agencies and asks for enforcement action. However, in light of the particularly egregious nature of these signs and the blatant disregard for zoning and landmark protections, GVSHP has asked the city to take particularly swift and decisive action in this case, with an eye towards seeing the signs removed as soon as possible.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Call 311 and file a complaint regarding the billboards at 97 Greenwich Avenue. Request to file two complaints — one for billboards erected without Landmarks approval, and one for billboards erected without Buildings permits. Get a complaint number and forward that number to GVSHP via e-mail.
