Equinox Hit With Violations, But Refuses to Remove Billboards

Following GVSHP’s letter to the Department of Buildings (DOB) and Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) earlier in the week requesting immediate enforcement action, GVSHP has received notice that DOB has issued 13 violations against the billboards on the Equinox Fitness building at 97 Greenwich Avenue and 12th Street, and the LPC has issued a warning letter. Unfortunately, however, the signs still remain up, and in its public statements Equinox has refused to acknowledge the illegality of the signs or given any indication that it intends to remove them.

In response, GVSHP wrote to the CEOs of Equinox Fitness and The Related Campanies, its parent company, urging them to see that the signs are removed immediately. GVSHP has also called upon both city agencies to cotinue to pursue these violations vigorously until the signs are removed, and urged the city to consider raising the modest fines for such large and flagrant billboard violations to help ensure that such actions actually do result in their removal.

GVSHP will continue to work to see that these billboards are removed; see coverage on NY1 News and in The Villager.
