Re: Support for landmark designation of Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection, 59 East 2nd Street

Dear Chair Tierney:

I strongly support the proposed landmark designation of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection at 59 East 2nd Street in the East Village.

Built in 1891 as the Mount Olivet Memorial Church, the striking structure at 59 East 2nd Street in the East Village was designed by prominent New York architectural firm J.C. Cady and Co. Though modest in size like most East Village structures, the handsome gothic revival limestone building conveys immense dignity and power on narrow East 2nd Street, as it overlooks the landmarked New York City Marble Cemetery.  Aside from its architectural distinction the church reflects the ongoing ethnic evolution of immigrant communities of the East Village, having served large German, Italian, Hungarian, and Slavic-speaking congregations. Recent plans to build a condo-tower on top of the church show the very real need for landmark protections for this historic edifice.

The East Village is one of New York City’s most historic neighborhoods, and yet it is sorely lacking in landmark and historic district protections. I support the proposed designation of the former 11th Street Methodist Episcopal Chapel at 545 East 11th Street as well, but I also urge the LPC to move ahead with the proposed designation of other sites in the East Village including the former Van Tassel & Kearney Horse Auction Mart/Frank Stella Studio at 128 East 13th Street, the tenement at 101 Avenue A, and the Congregation Mezritch Synagogue at 415 East 6th Street.
