Critical Chelsea Market Vote and Hearing Coming Up

Chelsea MarketThere are two very important upcoming milestones in our fight AGAINST the proposed upzoning of Chelsea Market.  If approved, it would allow office and hotel towers to be built atop the complex and above the High Line park (images HERE).

Borough President Scott Stringer will issue his recommendations regarding the plan by next Thursday, July 18th.  While the Borough President’s recommendations are not binding, they can influence the process and set a tone regarding the binding votes which follow.  GVSHP and our allies have urged the Borough President to recommend DENIAL of the upzoning application, which would allow developers to add 330,000 sq. ft. of space above the historic, State and National Register-listed complex.

After the Borough President issues his recommendation, the upzoning application will go to the City Planning Commission, which will hold a public hearing before voting on the plan.  The City Planning Commission MUST approve the plan in order for it to move ahead.  Then the plan goes to the City Council, which must also hold a public hearing before voting.  The City Council must also approve the plan in order for it to move ahead, and like the City Planning Commission, also has the power to modify or amend it.  The Council’s decision regarding the Chelsea Market upzoning application will be largely determined by Council Speaker Christine Quinn, in whose district Chelsea Market lies.
