City Council Public Hearing on Chelsea Market Upzoning Plan October 23rd
Tomorrow will be our one and only chance to speak directly to the City Council before they decide whether or not to upzone Chelsea Market to allow two large towers to be built atop the historic complex.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am at the City Council Chambers in City Hall (map HERE); bring photo ID.
When you arrive, sign up to speak. You will be given 2-3 minutes, but can submit longer written testimony (please bring at least 10 copies). If you cannot wait to be called to speak, you can leave your testimony. You can also just come to show support for preserving Chelsea Market.
City Council Speaker Quinn, who represents the area, will largely decide whether or not the plan is approved. Earlier this month, GVSHP and a broad coalition of Village, Chelsea, preservation, and tenant and affordable housing groups wrote to Speaker Quinn urging her to vote no on the proposal; read it HERE.
You can also write or e-mail Speaker Quinn with a sample letter HERE; you can also use the letter as sample testimony for tomorrow’s hearing.
This is our last chance to ensure that this wonderful historic New York City landmark is not marred forever.
You can find out more about Chelsea Market and the effort to preserve it HERE. You can support this and other preservation work of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation HERE.
