Full City Council Approves Chelsea Market Upzoning

After a two-week delay due to Superstorm Sandy and last week’s Nor’easter, this afternoon the full City Council voted to upzone Chlesea Market to allow the construction of two large structures atop the historic complex.

GVSHP and a large coalition of neighborhood, preservation, tenant, and affordable housing groups opposed the plan (read our joint letter HERE).  While our collective advocacy was able to help effect some changes to the plan, the planned development will nevertheless compromise this beloved New York landmark, exacerbate traffic and congestion in one of the most overdeveloped neighborhoods in our city, and shadow the High Line park.

You can read more about the decision in an op-ed which appears in the current issue of Chelsea Now, “Chelsea Market Should Not Have Been Upzoned,” HERE.

We want to thank everyone who wrote letters, sent e-mails, and attended hearings, press conferences, and rallies on this issue.

You can find out more about Chelsea Market and the effort to preserve it HERE.  You can support this and other preservation efforts by GVSHP HERE.
