Revised Plans for Huge Chelsea Market Additions Revealed

Revised plans for proposed additions to Chelsea Market

Earlier this month Jamestown Properties revealed revised plans for two huge additions it is seeking permission to build at the Chelsea Market complex at the northern end of the Gansevoort Market Historic District. Jamestown will file an application to change the zoning for the block early next year, which, if approved by the City Council and the City Planning Commission, would allow an almost 50% increase in the size of development on the site, and result in a large office building addition on the western end of the complex and a large new hotel on the eastern end.

GVSHP and a coalition of community and preservation groups are strongly opposed to this plan. It would not only mar a historic complex which has been a shining example of successful adaptive re-use, but it would increase traffic, commercialize a residential area, give away a huge and unjustified zoning change, and add new construction which would loom over the adjacent Gansevoort Market Historic District and the High Line. View the new plans and media coverage HERE.

GVSHP originally proposed that Chelsea Market be included in the NYC Gansevoort Market Historic District, but it was removed from the district designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2003.  GVSHP did nominate Chelsea Market and the entire Gansevoort Market area to the State and National Register of Historic Places, and they were designated in 2007. While NYC landmark designation could have prevented new large-scale additions to the complex,  State and National Register designations only provide incentives for preservation.
