City Council To Vote Soon on Slashing Neighborhood Zoning Protection

The City Council will have the final say on the Mayor’s proposal to slash neighborhood zoning protections and to make affordable housing measures dependent upon massive neighborhood upzonings.  This would do more harm than good in terms of affordability, and would damage and in some cases destroy the scale, character, and sense of place of many of our neighborhoods.  Read more in GVSHP's op-ed published in Chelsea Now and The Villager.

While the Mayor has been lobbying furiously to get his plans passed by the City Council, he has consistently refused to respond to GVSHP’s investigation which found that the City is regularly giving away illegal, extra bulk to developers in our neighborhood which they are ONLY supposed to receive if they provide required affordable housing.  Read GVSHP’s letter here.

On a positive note, it has recently been reported that in response to objections by groups like GVSHP and the City Council, the Mayor has dropped one element of his rezoning plan – the elimination of sliver law protections in some areas.  Read more here.

The Council will be voting later this month on these measures.
