HEARING ON CITYWIDE UPZONING PLANS
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16 AT 9AM
MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN
@ BOWLING GREEN STARTING AT 9AM

Dear friend,

Please come to this enormously important hearing by the City Planning Commission about the Mayor’s plans to
change zoning rules across the city.  These rezoning plans would gut hard-fought-for zoning protections, make new development in residential neighborhoods larger, and, in spite of its contentions, make our city less affordable, not more.

The City Planning Commission is the first of two bodies which must modify or approve the rezoning plans.  These plans have been rejected by the majority of our city’s community boards and borough presidents, though their votes are advisory.  If approved or modified by the City Planning Commission, these plans go to the City Council for a final vote or modification.

It’s critical that we have a very large turnout at the City Planning Commission hearing on Wednesday to demonstrate opposition to these plans.  If you can, sign up to testify and speak against the plans.  Or just come to show your opposition (GVSHP will provide materials for you to display so your opposition will be clear).

The Mayor has indicated that in spite of the community opposition already expressed, he intends to move ahead with these rezoning plans.

For more information on what these proposals are and how they work, read GVSHP’s op-ed “City’s Rezoning Plans Won’t Improve Quality or Affordability.”

To help understand how these rezoning plans would affect your particular neighborhood or concern, read:

HOW TO HELP:

  • Come to the National Museum of the American Indian (Broadway & Bowling Green) on Wednesday, December 16th starting at 9 am.  Sign up to testify.  Bring 20 copies of written testimony if possible.  Each speaker will be limited to four minutes, but written testimony can be any length.  If you cannot wait until you are called to speak, you can submit written testimony (the hearing will last hours).  Click here for a letter you can use as sample testimony.
  • Write to city officials who will be voting upon the plan and urge them to reject these rezoning plans > >

Once enacted, these rezoning plans would have a profound and permanent impact upon our city and our neighborhoods.  I hope to see you on the 16th.

Sincerely,

Andrew Berman
Executive Director
