Help preserve historic Synagogue at 334 East 14th Street

This morning’s public hearing on the proposed designation of Tifereth Israel/Town & Village Synagogue as a landmark was a success. Thank you to everyone who came to support designation, telling the Landmarks Preservation Commission just how much this unique building means to you as neighbors, community members, and New Yorkers.

Opponents also spoke, many of whom questioned the historic and architectural significance of the building, so it’s important to show the Commission our support over the next 30 days as it continues to accept letters on the matter. If you haven’t already, please submit a letter of support through the convenient link below. Thanks to you, we have already sent close to 200 letters!

The synagogue is at 334 East 14th Street between First and Second Avenues, a historic 150-year-old former German Baptist, then Ukrainian Autocephalic Church that was first heard for landmark designation in 1966! GVSHP and allied groups urged the Commission to consider the building again for landmark designation when it was recently put on the market for possible sale.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Write to the Landmarks Preservation Commission NOW, urging them to finally landmark this historic and endangered building — use sample letter HERE.

More information on the history of the building and the effort to preserve it can be found here.

We appreciate your continued support and will keep you updated.
