Public meetings about proposed East Village historic districts
Community Board #3 Parks Committee Public Hearing AND VOTE Thursday, July 14. Meeting begins at 7 pm at BRC Senior Services Center, 30 Delancey Street (Chrystie/Forsyth Streets). This is the 11th item on the agenda. Full Community Board #3 Public Hearing AND VOTE Tuesday, July 26. Meeting begins at 6:30 at Copper Union Rose Auditorium, 41 Cooper Square (6th/7th Streets). The public may sign up to speak on this (or any other issue) at the beginning of the meeting (details HERE).
Background: Last week Community Board #3's Landmarks Subcommittee voted 2-1 to support both proposed East Village Historic Districts. There was vocal opposition from a few institutions within the proposed districts, but a stronger showing of support for designation. WE NEED YOU TO SPEAK IN FAVOR OF DESIGNATION AT THE MEETINGS ON THE 14th AND THE 26th TO HELP ENSURE THAT THE PARKS COMMITTEE AND THE FULL BOARD ALSO SUPPORT DESIGNATION OF BOTH PROPOSED DISTRICTS.
The proposed districts were recently expanded by the Landmarks Preservation Commission at the urging of GVSHP and a coalition of community and preservation groups to include important sites which were originally excluded. The proposed districts only cover a small fraction of the valuable historic resources in the East Village, and it is CRITICAL that we generate support for the proposal in order to ensure that the City returns to the neighborhood to consider additional areas in the future for landmark designation.
