Re: Designation of Proposed East Village Historic Districts
I strongly support the designation of the two proposed East Village Historic Districts — the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District and the East 10th Street Historic District. I also strongly support expanded areas included in the proposed districts as a means to recognize and protect the East Village’s wealth of historic resources.
From its earliest days as a merchant and shipbuilder’s outpost, to its time as home to waves and waves of immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to its critical role in social, literary, labor, artistic, and urban reclamation movements of the 20th century, the East Village is one of the most historically rich areas of New York, and deserves to be recognized and protected as such. This is especially true now that more and more buildings representing the neighborhood’s rich historic legacy are being torn down or unsympathetically altered.
I ask that the Community Board #3 vote in favor of supporting these proposed historic districts with expanded boundaries to prevent any further loss of this neighborhood’s invaluable historic fabric as well as to recognize the immeasurable significance of its architectural and cultural history.
