Re: East Village/Lower East Side Historic District
Dear Council Member Lander:
I strongly support the designation of the entire proposed East Village/Lower East Side Historic District, and I urge you to uphold its designation.
From its earliest days as a merchant and shipbuilders’ outpost, to its time as home to waves and waves of immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to its critical role in social, literary, labor, artistic, and urban reclamation movements of the 20th century, the East Village is one of the most historically rich areas of New York, and deserves to be recognized and protected as such. This is especially true now that more and more buildings representing the neighborhood’s rich historic legacy are being torn down or unsympathetically altered.
I ask that the City Council vote in favor of designation of this entire proposed historic district. Please do so as soon to prevent any further loss of this neighborhood’s invaluable historic fabric, as well as to recognize the immeasurable significance of its architectural and cultural history.
