Re: Uphold Landmark Status for 135 Bowery

Dear Councilmember Chin:

I strongly urge you not to strip landmark status from the 1817 federal house at 135 Bowery.
This house is of unquestionable architectural, social, and historical significance.  It is also one of the very few landmarked houses from the earliest days of residential development in our city left on the Bowery.  Stripping it of landmark status would, under these circumstances, be tantamount to giving the green light for demolition of this historic building.

I understand that the City Council is considering removing landmark status from this building, which was conferred upon it by the Landmarks Preservation Commission earlier this year. To do so would not only be a terrible mistake for this building and this neighborhood. It would also be a further example of disturbing trend in which the City Council has, with increasing frequency, stripped landmark status from buildings where developers have opposed designation.

Please do the right thing – preserve our history, preserve our neighborhood, and uphold the landmark designation of 135 Bowery.
