(Above, left to right: 134, 114, and 81 Sullivan Street, just a few of the federal
style rowhouses newly landmarked and updated in GVSHP’s Federal Rowhouses report.)
GVSHP has expanded and updated our report Making the Case: Federal Houses Landmarked or Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places 1999-2016to include several Federal Style houses (1790-1835) recently landmarked as part of the designation of the Sullivan-Thompson Historic District GVSHP secured in December. It’s an exhaustive catalogue of nearly one hundred fifty of these charming and historic structures for which GVSHP has been able to get landmarks and/or State and National Register of Historic Places protections over the last two decades. Read it here.
Protecting and preserving Federal Style houses is a special part of GVSHP’s mission. In 1997, GVSHP received a grant from Preserve New York, a program of the New York State Council on the Arts and the Preservation League of NY State to document the hundreds of these suriving structures in Lower Manhattan. Since then, through individual landmark designations and inclusion in historic district designations and State and National Register of Historic Places listings, GVSHP has gotten recognition and protections for a huge number of these structures. As some of the oldest surviving buildings in Manhattan designed in the very first architectural style of the newly established American republic, federal style houses are a critical part of our history and the fabric of our neighborhoods.
