Landmarking of two 1820s Federal houses advances Two 1820 Federal era houses proposed for landmark designation by GVSHP and the NY Landmarks Conservancy (NYLC) at 486 and 488 Greenwich Street (btw. Spring and Canal) will be heard by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday, April 10th, at 3 pm. These two houses are among thirteen Federal era houses in Lower Manhattan that GVSHP and the NYLC have proposed for designation; five have been landmarked (127, 129, and 131 MacDougal Street, 4 St. Mark’s Place, and 67 Greenwich Street) and three are currently under consideration by the City (94, 94 1/2, and 96 Greenwich Street).  Federal era houses (1790-1830) are amongst the oldest class of structures remaining in New York City.  486 and 488 Greenwich Street are a particularly charming pair of houses that survive in an area which has seen massive development in recent years.   HOW TO HELP: Send a letter to the Landmarks Preservation Commission now urging them to landmark 486 and 488 Greenwich Street, and to move ahead with the rest of the 13 proposed Federal houses — CLICK HERE for a sample letter you can use.
