Dear Chair Tierney:
I write to urge you to consider landmark designation of the former Fire Patrol House #2 at 84 West 3rd Street and the entire South Village Historic District as proposed by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.
Fire Patrol House #2 is not only a critical piece of the historic South Village, but an incredibly important building in its own right. One of the last remaining remnants of a 200-year-old institution whose origins go back to Benjamin Franklin, Fire Patrol House #2 is a great piece of New York City history. The modestly-scaled but monumental building speaks to another era in city life when essential services which we now take for granted as being the responsibility of municipal government were still often provided by private institutions.
This is just one of many great pieces of history in the South Village which, lacking landmark protections, could disappear at any time. The South Village contains so many layers of our city’s cultural, architectural, and social history. While I am grateful that the LPC has begun consideration of part of the South Village for landmark designation, the majority of the neighborhood, including Fire Patrol House #2, has not yet even been considered. It would be a shame to lose more of this neighborhood's unique legacy, too much of which has already been lost.
