Re: Support for Rezoning Far West Village C6-1 District
Dear Director Burden:
I strongly urge the Commission to vote as soon as possible for the proposed zoning change for the C6-1 zone in the Far West Village.
The change, first requested by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and other community groups in early 2008, is long overdue and much-needed. The current zoning encourages out-of-scale commercial development in this historic and humanly-scaled neighborhood, whereas the new zoning will impose contextual height limits and end the incentives for dorm and hotel construction.
But the Commission must act without delay. While the community has been pushing the city for this change for nearly two and a half years, progress has been slow. As we feared, there are two projects in motion which could seek to move ahead under the existing, more permissive zoning. It is therefore critical that the Commission vote in favor of the rezoning as soon as possible.
