Far West Village Rezoning Presentation February 11
 On Thursday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 P.M., the Department of City Planning (DCP) will make a public presentation of its plan for a 6-block rezoning in the Far West Village which GVSHP and other community groups first began calling for two years ago. A 6-block area between Washington and Greenwich Streets, and between West 10th and West 12th Streets is currently zoned C6-1, which encourages out-of-scale commercial (such as hotel) and community facility (such as dorm) development. As requested by GVSHP and community groups, the zoning for this area will be changed to C1-6A, which limits the height and size of new development, and eliminates the current zoning bonus for hotel or dorm development. This is the same more restrictive zoning GVSHP successfully campaigned for in much of the rest of the far West Village in 2005; as this entire area is also landmarked, any new developments would also have to be approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
After a year and a half campaign by GVSHP and community groups, last fall DCP announced that they would agree to the rezoning we requested. Time, however, is of the essence; GVSHP has identified a dozen potential development sites within this small area, two of which are already in motion. Therefore in January after a lack of any movement on the promised rezoning, GVSHP and community groups urged DCP to make a public presentation of the plan (the next step in the process) no later than February. DCP agreed, and the presentation will take place under the auspices of the Community Board #2 Zoning Committee.
