Re: Need to Rezone the Far West Village and Hudson Square

Dear Mayor Bloomberg:

I write to urge you to support long-languishing community requests to rezone the C6-1 zone in the Far West Village and the M1-6 zone in Hudson Square. Many community groups such as the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation have been calling for such changes for years. While developer-requested rezonings in these areas continue to progress and receive approval from the City Planning Commission and City Council, there has not yet been any tangible progress on these two long-standing community-requested rezonings.

GVSHP and neighbors have been calling for a change to the Far West Village C6-1 zone for 1 1/2 years.  For nearly a year there was no response from City Planning; following a well-attended Town Hall meeting this spring, City Planning said they would consider the request, but they have since again gone silent and there has been no action from the agency. The change we are seeking is similar to one enacted in 2005 on neighboring blocks, and would be more consistent with neighborhood character.

GVSHP and neighbors have also been calling for a change to the M1-6 zone in Hudson Square since early 2006. There have been regular statements that the City and City Council would consider such a change, but there has been no concrete movement and no proposal from City Planning. The current zoning allows an outrageously inappropriate scale of development, including 45-story towers.  Since the initial call for a change, more than a half dozen out-of-character towers and additions have gone up in this small area, and more are planned.

I urge you to support these critical, long-overdue rezoning requests as soon as possible.
