Westbeth 40th Anniversary and Landmark Celebration

All are invited to participate in the celebration of Westbeth’s 40th Anniversary and its new status as a National Historic Landmark this Monday, May 3 starting at 5:30 and running until after 8 pm at Westbeth, 155 Bank Street (Washington/West Streets).

Formerly home to Bell Telephone Labs, Westbeth was converted into space for artists to live and work in 1970. It became the first subsidized housing development for artists in the United States and the first large-scale adaptive re-use of an industrial building for residential purposes anywhere in the world. Last year, GVSHP completed a three-year project funded by the JM Kaplan Fund to document the history of the creation of Westbeth. This included oral histories with key figures including architect Richard Meier and Merce Cunningham, and led to GVSHP’s successful nomination of Westbeth for listing on the State and National Register of Historic Places. Westbeth is now under consideration for landmark status by the city as well.

Westbeth continues to provide affordable housing and work space to hundreds of artists, and has nurtured countless luminaries in the fields of painting, acting, dance, and the visual arts over the years. GVSHP continues to work with Westbeth to help preserve this groundbreaking landmark for future generations to benefit from.
