Hearing date set for proposed landmark designation of the Westbeth complex

The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has set Tuesday, January 12th for its hearing on the proposed landmark designation of the Westbeth complex. The time of the hearing is yet to be determined, but it will be some time between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M., at the LPC offices, One Centre Street (at Chambers Street), the 9th floor. As soon as we know the time of the hearing, it will be posted. The public can attend and provide comment, or written comments can be sent to the LPC in advance of the hearing for consideration. We will let you know more about how you can do this closer to the hearing date.

As you know, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation was recently successful in getting the Westbeth complex listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places, which recognizes its groundbreaking significance and provides the opportunity for grants and loans for its restoration and upkeep. In 2004, the city promised to consider landmark designation for Westbeth, but did not move ahead on this promise until the nomination of the site for the State and National Registers was in place.

Westbeth speaks to so much of the great history of the Far West Village and of New York, and to what makes our neighborhood and our city so innovative, dynamic, and wonderful.  We are very proud to be a part of documenting, celebrating, and preserving this wonderful history.

For more information about Westbeth, see our webpage. You can also see the LPC’s “statement of significance” about Westbeth HERE.
