Dear Ms. Howe,
I write to express my strong support for the nomination of Westbeth by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation for listing on the State and National Register of Historic Places.
Westbeth is extremely important as a home to artists and the arts. It is a unique and historically significant the building; its groundbreaking conversion to housing in the late 1960s was incredibly influential and innovative. I am glad to see that this exceptional history has been so extensively documented and is being recognized. I hope the State and Federal government will follow suit by listing it on the State and National Register of Historic Places.
The recognition of the important role this complex played in the lives of countless artists and in ushering in a new era of adaptive re-use of industrial buildings and in supporting affordable housing for those in the arts is long overdue.
The investment made in Westbeth has paid dividends many times over in terms of supporting the arts and helping to breathe new life into a formerly largely abandoned and forgotten neighborhood. Listing Westbeth on the State and National Register of Historic Places will not only recognize that great contribution, but help ensure that it is one which this unique complex can continue to make well into the future.
