Huge Turnout in Opposition at Gansevoort Landmarks Hearing

We had an incredible, standing room-only turnout at the Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing on the proposed destruction and redevelopment of Gansevoort Street.  Hundreds came and the hearing lasted for hours, with only two people speaking in favor of the proposal, and all others speaking forcefully against it.

Because the hearing went so late, the Commissioners did not discuss the item, but merely closed the hearing.  The next step is they will schedule a public meeting to discuss it, which means there will be no additional public testimony, simply a discussion among the Commissioners open to the public to hear, with possible dialogue with the applicant.  It is possible that the Commission could render a decision at that time.

That public meeting date has not been set, but we will let you know as soon as it has been.

In the meantime, the Commission is accepting public comments on this application through Thursday.  If you have not already, please send letters to the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Mayor opposing the plan here.  If you have already, please ask friends and neighbors to do so before the deadline!

You can also see images of the developer’s entire presentation here and read more about yesterday’s hearing here.
