We need you on the 24th to Save the South Village

Nearly ten years ago we submitted our proposal for landmark designation for the ENTIRE South Village.  We’ve made incredible progress – about 2/3 of the area has been landmarked, encompassing about 500 buildings.

But the City has been stubbornly resistant to landmarking the final, vulnerable third – the area south of Houston Street.  AND NOW WE HAVE OUR LAST BEST CHANCE TO GET IT DESIGNATED.

An application to rezone the nearby St. John’s Terminal site is entering the public approval process. In 2013 we used a similar process to force the City’s hand and get landmark designation of the second phase of our South Village landmarking proposalIF WE DON’T USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO GET THE THIRD AND FINAL PHASE DONE, IT MAY NEVER HAPPEN.

We need to tell the City and our elected officials that NO rezoning of this area should move ahead UNLESS landmarking of the South Village is included.

CAN I COUNT ON YOU TO HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN?

Streets like this in unlandmarked portions of the South Village are virtually unchanged for over 100 years, but vulnerable.

Here’s What I Need You To Do:

  • Come to the Community Board #2 Public Hearing on the St. John’s rezoning application on Tuesday, May 24 at 6:30 pm in the basement auditorium of Scholastic, 557 Broadway (south of Prince).  Speak during the public session and tell them it is UNACCEPTABLE for this rezoning to move ahead UNLESS Phase III of the South Village landmarking is also approved.  If you can attend, please email hbubbins@gvshp.org.

  • Send a letter to city officials now calling for South Village landmarking and other neighborhood zoning protections to accompany any rezoning of the St. John’s site – CLICK HERE

In the last fifteen years we have helped get more than 1,100 buildings landmarked and zoning protections for nearly one hundred blocks of our neighborhood.  With your help, I believe we can get the beautiful historic South Village the landmark protections it deserves.
