HUGE TURNOUT AT PIER 40/ST. JOHN'S HEARING
DEMANDING
LANDMARKING AND ZONING PROTECTIONS;
MORE HEARINGS
MAY 31 AND JUNE 6 -
KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING!

Neighbors made their sentiments known during Tuesday night’s hearing.

We had a huge turnout at Tuesday’s hearing on the proposed Pier 40/St. John’s rezoning (photos here). Thanks to everyone who attended, including South Village Neighbors the Greenwich Village Community Task Force. Our message was heard loud and clear: the final phase of the South Village MUST be landmarked, and protections to prevent further overdevelopment in our neighborhood from “air rights” transfers from the Hudson River Park MUST be a part of any deal.

We’re fighting to protect the not-yet-landmarked section of the South Village (l.) and waterfront blocks where air rights transfers from the Hudson River Park are allowed (r.), which would be endangered by the current plan.

The proposed rezoning of the St. John's site will increase development pressure on the endangered, historic section of the South Village south of Houston Street, which the city so far has REFUSED to landmark. And without action by the City and State, this rezoning could just be the TIP OF THE ICEBERG of future oversized development in our neighborhood stemming from "air rights" transfers from the Hudson River Park which the State Legislature made possible in 2013

LET’S KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING TO PROTECT OUR NEIGHBORHOOD – especially the vulnerable South Village and our waterfront blocks, which the current plan endangers. Two additional upcoming hearings by the Community Board allow anyone who missed Tuesday’s hearing to speak, and to find out more about the City and the developer’s proposal.

HOW TO HELP:

  • If you have not already, send letters to City and State officials demanding much-needed landmark and zoning protections for our neighborhood which this proposal makes so necessary – click HERE.

  • Come to these upcoming Community Board 2 public hearings on the plan – demand landmark and zoning protections if you have not already spoken (use this letter as sample testimony – 2 min. limit), find out more, and ask questions:

    * Tuesday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. at the 14th Street passage on the High Line at West 14th Street (this meeting will focus on the proposal’s environmental impacts, but you can speak on any aspect if you did not speak at prior meetings).

    * Monday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the NYC Fire Musuem, 278 Spring St., 3rd Floor (this meeting will focus on the air rights issue, but you can speak on any aspect if you did not speak at prior meetings).
