Big Turnout and Pushback Against Pier 40/St. John's/Hudson River Park Air Rights Plan

GVSHP members and supporters made their demands known at the City Planning hearing. Credit: Patch.

Thank you to the scores of neighbors and supporters who turned out yesterday for the all-day, standing-room only hearing on the proposed St. John’s Terminal development and Hudson River Park air rights transfer. GVSHP and our members were well-represented, and those raising concerns about or opposition to the plan were by far the majority of speakers. Read GVSHP’s testimony, and see coverage in Patch and Curbed.
Yesterday’s hearing will be the City Planning Commission’s only hearing before they vote this fall on the proposed approvals.  However, the public can still submit written comments.  From there, the plan goes to the City Council, which will have the final say on whether or not this plan is approved, denied, or modified to meet some of the very serious concerns we and others have laid out.

This image shows the massive overdevelopment which air rights transfers could lead to in the West Village without the restrictions GVSHP is demanding.

GVSHP is demanding no approvals without landmark protections for nearby threatened historic parts of the South Village that currently lack landmark designation; prohibitions on any future Hudson River Park air rights transfers anywhere between 14th Street and Canal Street (Community Board #2) to prevent overdevelopment of these areas; and a ban on all traffic-generating “big box” or “destination retail” stores in the planned new development, which will be located between West and Washington Streets near Houston Street.
