South Village Faces More Pressure as City Council Vote Nears

Development sites in the South Village

The City Council is expected to vote in early March on the Hudson Square rezoning, which will greatly increase development pressure on the already fragile South Village neighborhood.  The South Village has been waiting for years for promised landmark designation to protect it from ever-increasing demolitions and out-of-character new development.

Read more about the increasing number of threats to the South Village’s character from Minetta Street to Sullivan, Bleecker, and Spring Streets.

The Hudson Square rezoning is now before the City Council, which can approve or reject it.  As the local Councilmember representing the area and Speaker of the City Council, Speaker Christine Quinn will largely decide the fate of the Hudson Square rezoning and the South Village.  We have urged Speaker Quinn to demand that the City move ahead with the long-promised landmark designation of the South Village, or vote down the Hudson Square rezoning if they do not, as it will accelerate the South Village’s destruction if passed without landmark protections.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Call Speaker Quinn’s office TODAY at 212-564-7757 and tell her to to vote NO on the Hudson Square rezoning UNLESS the City agrees to landmark the South Village, or write her HERE
