Upcoming public hearing on Hudson Square rezoning

Community Board #2 Land Use Committee public hearing Thursday, July 14. Meeting begins at 6:30 pm at Metropolitan College, 75 Varick Street at Canal Street, 11th floor. This is the second item on the agenda (details HERE).

Background: Trinity Real Estate plans to propose a zoning change to a large swath of Hudson Square between Houston and Canal Streets, Sixth Avenue and Greenwich Street (see map); they have not yet formally filed, but the public hearing is an opportunity to find out more about the potential proposal and provide feedback. Once a plan is formally filed, the Community Board, Borough President, City Planning Commission, and City Council will hold public hearings and vote on whether to approve, deny, or amend the requested rezoning.

The current zoning for the area is not good, and GVSHP has long called for it to be changed; whether or not all or parts of the Trinity's rezoning plan should be approved, however, is a different question. This developer-requested rezoning is also not the rezoning city officials promised following the controversies around their approval of the Trump SoHo 'Condo-Hotel,' which is located in the potential rezoning area. The proposed rezoning might also increase development pressure on the adjacent proposed South Village Historic District, which the City has refused to landmark.
